Inpatient Dialysis and Outpatient Apheresis Unit – The University of Kansas Hospital

Inpatient Dialysis and Outpatient Apheresis Unit, The University of Kansas Hospital
Kansas City, Kansas

This project involved a much needed expansion of both the inpatient dialysis unit and the ever expanding outpatient apheresis unit. These two similar modality clinics were combined into one Blood Treatment Center creating a 10 bay inpatient dialysis unit and a 9 room apheresis unit. The two units share support spaces, so creating the appropriate adjacencies to minimize walking steps was crucial to a functional design. The key to both areas was providing the appropriate treatment bay or room size and giving the privacy needed to help patients feel comfortable and at ease while ensuring the care givers could have their own separate work space with complete line of site into the bays/rooms to facilitate visualization of the patient.
